Shawnee come in at #17 on CNN/Money’s “Best Small Cities”

CNN MoneyIf you’re a Shawnee, KS resident, give yourself a pat on the back!  Why?  Because Shawnee was just ranked as #17 on CNN/Money Magazine’s list of the Best Places to Live in 2010!  How great is that?  Here is what the magazine had to say about our city…

ShawneeTaking a walk through Shawnee Town is like walking back through time to the city’s roots as a farming center. The annual Old Shawnee Days celebration commemorates its western heritage with a carnival, a parade, food vendors and arts and crafts.  Shawnee also has a modern side: It’s within commuting distance of jobs in Kansas City, and Bayer HealthCare and other businesses are right in town.  There’s plenty of shopping, restaurants, an indoor family entertainment center, and more than 560 acres of parkland.

Of course there are other reasons that Shawnee rankes so high on the list.  According to CNN/Money, compared to the rest of the Top 100, Shawnee’s…

  • median family income ($93,289) is higher than average
  • sales tax (only 5.3%) is lower than average
  • job growth from 2000-2009 (26.7%) was higher than average

Shawnee’s statistics for air quality, crime and commute times were also better than average.  More of a reason to make a prime location like Hampton Woods Apartments your home.

The award for best burger in the Kansas City metro area goes to…

Who’s got the best burger in the Kansas City metro area?  According to the Food Network’s new 50 States, 50 Burgers report, it’s one of either two spots.  See, what they attempted to report on was the one “must taste” burger in each state.  But with Kansas City’s unique geographic location right on the border of Missouri and Kansas, they actually have two burgers in the area that are listed.  So, Hampton Woods, I’ve decided to put on us the unenvious task of deciding which is the greater of the two.  The contenders are…

“Inside Out Burger”

The burger equivalent of the tunnel-of-fudge cake: a rich patty—with tenderloin, rib eye and New York strip—stuffed with blue cheese that oozes out when you bite in. The chef at this modern joint serves the thick patty with bacon and an onion ring on a soft onion-brioche bun.

“Steakburger”

Conventional wisdom says that one should never crush a burger with a spatula, but that technique is exactly what has drawn crowds to this small Midwestern chain for nearly 70 years. Razor-thin patties made from ground steak are seared on a flattop grill until the edges are crisp.

Well, what do you think?  If you haven’t had the fortune of tasting both of these delicous sounding sandwiches, then which one do you think sounds the tastiest?  As for me, I love a classic burger like Winstead’s…but the burger at blanc’s looks REAALLLY good.  I think I’m going to have to go with them.

Fill Mom’s Gas Tank

I love my mother (and wife) dearly but I’m terrible at shopping for gifts.  Especially on Mother’s Day because I always want to find that special, unique gift idea that outdoes what I did last year.  But still, I always wait until the last minute and I never know exactly what to get.  But this year I did some “web surf research” and f0und some pretty cool, unique and inexpensive ideas.  Here’s one…

Take your mother’s car and fill it up with gas.  Simple, yet effective.  This is by far not the cheapest Mother’s Day gift these days, but if you show up at Mom’s on Mother’s Day, no gift and without a clue, remember that this can save you in a pinch.

You can even take it one step further and run her car through the car wash.

If you want to check out a few more ideas, check out the Mother’s Day Central website.
